What happens if my driver license is suspended?
If your driver license is suspended, you will not be permitted to drive any vehicle until your license is reinstated. If you are caught driving on a suspended license, you may receive another citation for driving while suspended, which carries a fine of $124.00. In addition to suspending your license, the Court may also send your overdue balance to a collection agency, which may intercept tax refunds, garnish wages, or attach funds in your bank accounts.

What are my payment options?
In order to lift a suspension, you must make a payment, either in full or of at least 30%, on the total amount due on the citations that are suspending you. Payments can be made via cash, check, money order, credit card or debit card.

How can I know if citations outside the City of Milwaukee are suspending my license?
If you received citations that were filed with other courts, such as Circuit Court or some other Municipal Court, and have not arranged for payment, they could also suspend your driver license. To find out if you have citations outside the City of Milwaukee which are suspending your license, visit the DMV website.

How long before I can reinstate my license once my suspension has been lifted at the court level?
When a suspension is lifted, the court notifies the DOT electronically overnight. It takes the DOT a minimum of two business days to process this information. After the minimum two days, contact the DMV to inquire about next steps to reinstate your license. Wait times for processing reinstatements can vary from two days to two weeks and are heavily dependent on your situation. Additionally, be prepared to pay any reinstatement fees directly to the DMV.

I just paid 30% to get my suspension lifted. What happens now and when can I reinstate?
Processing times to lift a suspension after a 30% payment is received is 1-2 weeks and you will be notified by mail with your next payment due date. All 30% payments and the cases included are reviewed by court personnel hence the longer processing time. When you receive your notice in the mail it will signify that the DMV has been notified that the suspension was lifted by the court. Contact the DMV to inquire about next steps to reinstate your license.
